The plight of refugees seeking protection in Europe from violence and persecution has shocked the global community in recent months. Images of men, women and children fleeing oppressive regimes, and the tragic consequences for some, have touched our humanity.
In South Australia, JusticeNet SA helps asylum seekers exercise their rights under Australian law. Sadly, there is no legal aid available for our clients, and yet with our help, 75% of our clients have demonstrated that decisions being made about their cases – and their future - are legally flawed. Given the awful consequences of a wrong decision – deportation back to the country from which they fled persecution – the work undertaken by our network of pro bono lawyers is of vital importance.
