Why become a Member?
The legal profession in South Australia has always recognised the importance of providing free and reduced-fee legal assistance to those experiencing financial hardship. Many law firms and barristers already provide assistance on an ad hoc or informal basis. As a ‘clearinghouse’ for requests for pro bono legal assistance, JusticeNet promotes the efficient and coordinated use of pro bono resources in the legal profession.
JusticeNet assists member firms and barristers in the provision of pro bono assistance by:
- Obtaining and collating information and documentation relevant to the assessment;
- Thoroughly assessing applicants entitlement to pro bono legal assistance, including the merits of the matter;
- referring only meritorious matters;
- referring matters which are appropriate to the experience and expertise of you or your firm;
- spreading the pro bono workload between member firms and barristers;
- preparing a comprehensive brief for referral;
- accepting referrals from firms which need to refer matters not within their expertise or capacity; and
- providing ongoing support, if needed, to firms and barristers who accept referrals.
Your law firm can indicate the areas of law in which you are prepared to accept pro bono briefs. Acceptance of a referral is always based on the member's interest, expertise and capacity to take on a particular matter.
JusticeNet membership is affordable and carries a range of other tangible benefits, including:
- Demonstration of the ethics and values of your law firm;
- Access to innovative and challenging pro bono opportunities;
- Establishing an innovative pro bono program;
- Increased staff satisfaction and morale;
- The option of staff secondments to JusticeNet;
- Access to JusticeNet publications and media; and
- Potential tax deductibility.
